"It is a special pleasure to introduce R. T. France's commentary to the pastoral and scholarly community, who should find it a truly exceptional and helpful volume." So says Gordon Fee in his preface to this work. France's masterful commentary on Matthew focuses on exegesis of Matthew's text as it stands rather than on the prehistory of the material or details of Synoptic comparison. It is concerned throughout with what Matthew himself meant to convey about Jesus and how he set about doing so within the cultural and historical context of first-century Palestine.

Amid the wide array of Matthew commentaries available today, France's world-class stature, his clear focus on Matthew and Jesus, his careful methodology, and his user-friendly style promise to make this volume an enduring standard for years to come.

    Helpful and in-depth commentary

This commentary on the Gospel of Matthew is in-depth and fairly comprehensive. France clearly explains each verse and lays out alternative interpretations fairly as well. Highly recommended for anyone studying Matthew in detail.

    Peerless

This commentary by R. T. France has been a constant companion as I've preached through Matthew's Gospel and a peerless resource for that task. It is dedicated in its approach to understanding the original text and thorough in its engagement with scholarship. Above all this, France brings the text to life and writes in a passionate, lively manner that is often missing from technical commentaries. A blessing and a pleasure.

Deep and Insightful Without Getting Bogged Down

    R. T. France has written what is without doubt my favourite commentary on Matthew's Gospel. France has a superb grasp of not only the book of Matthew but also its historical and theological context and wider message. His commentary is deep and insightful without getting bogged down in minutiae like so many other commentaries do. \\r\\nAs a pastor, I've found this to be an extremely helpful commentary to converse with as we've walked through the Gospel of Matthew as a church. Highly recommended.

Thorough and wonderful commentary on Matthew

This is a wonderful commentary on Matthew. One of the real strengths of this book is that it highlights key themes and ideas of Matthew's Gospel, and demonstrates how they run throughout the book. More often then not will also give a great overview of a passage's thrust in the introduction. When you add his great contextual and cultural understanding, it is clear that France has written a commentary that will be of great use to many for years to come.

    Wonderful exegesis of Matthew

This commentary on Matthew has a few noteworthy strengths. Firstly, it has a great understanding and focus upon Matthew's theological emphasis throughout his Gospel. Secondly, France's understanding of the Israelite's, both historically and contextually, leads to important exegetical insights. And finally, France does well at placing a particular text within the overall thrust of Matthew. This is a delightful and easy-to-understand commentary that deserves a read if you want a better grasp of the book of Matthew. \\r\\n
