Carson presented two talks at Park Community Church in Chicago, IL, sponsored by the Henry Institute at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. The topic of their presentation was on the relationship of scholarship and pastoral ministry. Piper centered on the importance of scholarship and academic pursuits in his role as pastor. Carson, conversely, focused on the importance of pastoral ministry in his career as scholar. The event was enthusiastically received and brought great insight and balance.
Now their talks have been edited with additional content and put into book form. Weaving testimony and teaching, Piper and Carson challenge all those in ministry to think carefully and holistically about their calling. Good, but other books flesh out the role and journey to Pastor-Scholar
Piper and Carson, similar but different in their understanding of Scripture, share their journey in how they became a scholar-pastor (Piper) and pastor-scholar (Carson), yet maintain a desire and interest to engage in their former roles. It is true that contemporary pastors have lost the vision of becoming scholarly (or academic if you prefer the term) and while one does not have to have as many degrees as a thermometer, evidence of studies (such as the example of Arnold A. Dallimore) should reveal a shepherd utilising all their heart, mind, soul and strength for the Lord and His people. While Piper's autobiographical analysis was more engaging than Carson's, Carson did a better job of addressing how one should think - and balance - the concept of becoming a pastor-scholar. One prays for more studied pastors in the pulpit, especially Australia. This is a good book, however, other books on the role and journey to being a Pastor-Scholar/Academic/Theologian would be better to read if one were to embark on this path.

Balanced ministry
In this rather short book, Piper and Carson bring their many years of pastoring and writing to bear on the specialisation of the role of pastors and the role of scholars. Both men demonstrate from their own experiences just how important it is to have some mixing of these two roles to enrich all teachers, preachers and pastors. I really enjoyed the autobiographical nature of this book as it provided a small window into the journey these two men have taken. The book is very easy to read but provides great insight and challenge, particularly to those in leadership.
