Modern culture is obsessed with identity. Since the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision in 2015, sexual identity has dominated both public discourse and cultural trends-yet no historical phenomenon is its own cause. From Augustine to Marx, various views and perspectives have contributed to the modern understanding of the self.
In this timely book, Carl Trueman analyses the development of the sexual revolution as a symptom - rather than the cause - of the human search for identity. Trueman surveys the past, brings clarity to the present, and gives guidance for the future as Christians navigate the culture in humanity's ever-changing quest for identity.
"Carl Trueman explains modernity to the church, with depth, clarity, and force. The significance of The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self . . . is hard to overstate." - Rod Dreher, from the Foreword

Very insightful
While dense in parts, it is overall an incredibly insightful and profound recount as to how society has arrived to where it is. Having an overview of the book before jumping in can help you stay above water in the intellectual prose. The main overall progression can be recounted in 3 stages as it explores the influencers responsible with constant reference to concepts introduced early in the book (eg Psychological Man & Expressive Individualism). These stages are 1. The self becoming psychologised (Rousseau & The Romantics), 2. Psychology becoming sexualised (Freud) and 3. Sex becoming politicised (Marriage of Freud & Marx). The summary chapters are helpful after the in-depth chapters. I would highly recommend to anyone seeking insight into our culture, however be aware that it is a somewhat demanding read for the layperson (myself included in that).

Critical Insight into our Cultural Moment
Trueman takes us on a journey to identify how we have gotten to where we are in western society today, especially in the light of transgender ideology. Each key development that he details left me going, 'Aha! I see how this assumption underpins modern secular thinking'. It is also challenging in causing us to assess how we as believers in the west have absorbed some of this thinking. The insights of this book are crucial for western Christians to understand and our pastors especially need to be equipped with this background.
