"When it comes to happily-ever-afters, Melanie Dickerson is the undisputed queen of fairy-tale romance, and all I can say is-long live the queen!" -Julie Lessman, award-winning author

She knows women are expected to marry, cook, and have children, not go to war. Can she manage to stay alive, save her mother, and keep the handsome son of a duke from discovering her secret?

When Mulan takes her father's place in battle against the besieging Teutonic Knights, she realizes she has been preparing for this journey her whole life-and that her life, and her mother's, depends on her success. As the adopted daughter of poor parents, Mulan has little power in the world. If she can't prove herself on the battlefield, she could face death-or, perhaps worse, marriage to the village butcher.

Disguised as a young man, Mulan meets the German duke's son, Wolfgang, who is determined to save his people even if it means fighting against his own brother. Wolfgang is exasperated by the new soldier who seems to be one step away from disaster at all times-or showing him up in embarrassing ways.

From rivals to reluctant friends, Mulan and Wolfgang begin to share secrets. But war is an uncertain time and dreams can die as quickly as they are born. When Mulan receives word of danger back home, she must make the ultimate choice. Can she be the son her bitter father never had? Or will she become the strong young woman she was created to be?

This fresh reimagining of the classic tale takes us to fifteenth-century Lithuania where both love and war challenge the strongest of hearts.

**From *New York Times* bestselling author Melanie Dickerson comes a fresh reimagining of the classic *Mulan* tale.**

Mulan isn't afraid to pretend to be a son and assume her father's soldier duties in war. But what happens when the handsome son of a duke discovers her secret?

Mulan is trying to resign herself to marrying the village butcher for the good of her family, but her adventurous spirit just can't stand the thought. At the last minute, she pretends to be the son her father never had, assumes his duties as a soldier, and rides off to join the fight to protect the castle of her liege lord's ally from the besieging Teutonic Knights.

Wolfgang and his brother Steffan leave Hagenheim with several other soldiers to help their father's ally in Poland. When they arrive, Wolfgang is exasperated by the young soldier Mikolai who seems to either always be one step away from disaster ... or showing Wolfgang up in embarrassing ways.

When Wolfgang discovers his former rival and reluctant friend Mikolai is actually a girl, he is determined to protect her. But battle is a dangerous place where anything can happen-and usually does.

When Mulan receives word that her mother has been accused of practicing witchcraft through her healing herbs and skills, Mulan's only thought is of defending her. Will she be able to trust Wolfgang to help? Or will sacrificing her own life be the only way to save her mother?

A retelling of a Disney Classic

I've loved every one of Melanie Dickerson's books and this one did not disappoint! It's loosely based on the story of Mulan, a girl who must either marry a despicable, much older man, or go to fight a war on behalf of her deceased father (whom the authorities don't realise is dead). If she doesn't, her and her mother will have nowhere to live and no one to provide for them. Mulan is no wilting violet, but has been training in archery since a young girl. It's the ultimate girl power story, with romance thrown in the mix, it makes for an epic tale!

    I honestly enjoyed this book. . .

the warrior maiden was really wonderful and as a full time senior student ;) spending the precious little time I have on reading this books says a lot. It was really captivating and I could tell because I could not take my eyes of the pages until I reached the acknowledgements page. melanie dickerson's depiction of the famous fairy tale character, mulan, was super creative and I loved how she included God into the story. If I am being completely honest, I find no downfalls in this book at all and I highly recommend it to those who are looking for christian, romance books. I think that this genre is mainly targeted at teens and young adults, however anyone could enjoy it, so if you are reading this review and are interested, you definitely should buy it! I love having this book on my shelf because I could read it over and over again without ever getting bored of it. \\nThe quality of the hardback book is really good, however I have to mention the front cover is actually printed on a piece of paper and wrapped around the hard cover (check out the book in a physical store if my descriptions don't make sense). \\nby not reading this book you are definitely missing out! :)

    Great, fun read!

I really liked this book for a number of things. Firstly, I loved the plot of this book and how it connected to the other books in the series. Secondly, I've always been a fan of Mulan, so this retelling was really interesting for me from the moment I knew it was based on the story of Mulan and lastly, the quality of the hardback cover and pages was pretty good. I'd recommend this book to anyone, especially Mulan fans.

    Fairy Tale Bliss

I have been following through with this series since book one. This would have to be one of my favourites so far. While perfectly fine as a standalone, there is something so beautiful and satisfying seeing how the characters from book one have grown and matured so much over the years. I really love Wolfgang's character and am so glad that he finally got his own story to tell. All is not as it seems on the battlefield, and Wolfgang is about to be tested in ways he never could have imagined. Also love how the Mulan fairy tale is woven throughout in a very realistic and believable way. Loved the elements of historical accuracy too, which is greatly appreciated by lovers of history, like myself. Great moral lesson about refusing to hide in shame for past mistakes, learning to admit shortcomings and failure, and above all, embracing the future with the daily help of God's grace upon our lives. Brilliant Read. Looking forward to the next book in the series!!
