The Amplified Bible (AMP) was first published in 1965 by the Lockman Foundation and Zondervan Publishing, with the goal of helping readers grasp the full richness of the original biblical languages. Based on the American Standard Version (1901), it expands the English text by including multiple shades of meaning for key Hebrew and Greek words, often presented in brackets or parentheses. This unique method allows readers to see possible variations of interpretation directly in the text, offering depth for study without requiring knowledge of the original languages. The AMP follows a philosophy of literal translation while also clarifying nuance, making it a valuable resource for devotion, teaching, and word study. Revised editions, most recently in 2015, have updated the language for clarity while preserving its distinctive approach. The Amplified Bible continues to be cherished by those who desire a deeper, more detailed understanding of Scripture.
