Leather Bibles

Leather Bibles are made to be read every day and kept for decades. A good leather cover softens as you use it, and many leather editions add features that help them last, like sewn bindings that lie flat and gilded edges that resist wear. Our leather Bibles include genuine leather, calfskin and goatskin editions in the NIV, ESV, KJV, NKJV, NLT and more, along with more affordable imitation leather options. Genuine leather is the most durable and develops character over the years. Goatskin is the softest and most flexible, and is usually found on premium editions. Imitation leather gives a similar look and feel at a lower price, and holds up well to everyday use. A leather Bible also makes a lasting gift for a baptism, confirmation, wedding or ordination.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between genuine, bonded and imitation leather?
Genuine leather is real animal hide. It's the most durable and softens with use. Bonded leather is made from leather scraps bonded together with a synthetic backing. It's cheaper but can peel or flake over time. Imitation leather is fully synthetic and contains no animal leather. Publishers sell it under names like LeatherSoft and LeatherTouch, and it's durable and good value.
What is the best leather for a Bible?
Goatskin is generally considered the finest Bible leather. It's soft, flexible and very durable, and it's also the most expensive. Calfskin is smooth and hard-wearing at a slightly lower price. Top-grain cowhide is firmer and a good long-lasting choice. The best option depends on your budget and how you like a Bible to feel in your hands.
What do "sewn binding" and "edge-lined" mean?
A sewn binding means the pages are stitched together in sections rather than glued. The Bible lies flat when open and holds together much longer. Edge-lined means the cover's lining is attached right to its edges instead of to stiff board. This makes the cover very flexible and is a feature of premium editions.
How do I look after a leather Bible?
Keep it out of direct sun and away from heat, including a hot car. Once or twice a year, rub a small amount of leather conditioner into a genuine leather cover. Test it on a hidden spot first. Don't use conditioner on bonded or imitation leather. Otherwise, just use it. Leather Bibles soften and improve with handling.
