This best-selling book offers an approach to discipleship that goes far beyond routine levels of church involvement. Peter Scazzero shares the results of his own pastoral transformation - challenging token and faddish religiosity, and fostering a mature spirituality among church members.

One percent of church leaders say that churches are doing well in discipling new and young believers. After almost three decades of pastoring New Life Fellowship Church in New York City, Peter Scazzero discovered that most people are not being changed in our churches, and, as a result, are not changing the world.

Scazzero found two truths to be true: (1) you can't be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature, and (2) unless you slow your life down for a first-hand relationship with Jesus Christ, little change is possible. The integration of these two truths unleashed a spiritual revolution in Scazzero, in his church, and now in thousands of other churches.

In this revised bestselling book, Scazzero outlines his journey and offers a roadmap for a discipleship with Jesus that is powerfully transformative. Topics include how to identify emotionally unhealthy spirituality, how to grow your soul through grief and loss, and how to develop into an emotionally mature adult.

Offering new stories and principles, this updated edition will inspire readers to revolutionize their spiritual life.

    Eisegesis - not exegesis

This book was recommended by a friend, and although it has some good and valid points, I struggled to get past how his ""exegesis"" was simply his points in search of a Scriptural proof text. He read into the Scriptures not what they say, but what he wanted them to say, even though they clearly didn't say what he suggested. This, for me, made his entire argument suspect.

His conclusion was that we all needed to guide ourselves by ""the rule"", based upon the monks but geared to our own taste (and even here he eliminated what he did not like of the Rule of St. Benedict), as well as ""Sabbath keeping"" in some sort, again, geared to our own taste.

Again, some of his points are valid and helpful, but read this book cautiously, and don't blindly follow what he says.

    Seriously worthwhile read

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality is such a thought provoking read! Scazzero shares valuable insight on emotional health as it relates to spirituality. Each principle shared is relevant and highly applicable. I took so many notes and have re-read it a couple times since. Can't recommend it enough!

    A Must Read

In this must-read book, Peter Scazzero addresses a very important issue that many face, including Christians, and that is the problem of being emotionally unhealthy. He argues, and rightly so, that we cannot be spiritually healthy if we are emotionally unhealthy. Scazzero points out it is important to recognize we are human beings with emotions. Even God has emotions. Equally important, we must not deny or suppress them but accept and process them. Scazzero also helpfully points out how our family of origins influence and shape the way we handle our emotions. The next part of emotionally healthy spirituality is to practice contemplative spirituality and here the author introduces us to this ancient practice in the Christian church. Overall, this is a great book which ought to be read by every Christian.

    Game changer

This book is thought provoking and perhaps revolutionary. In a world where you can't ever do enough or be enough, it encourages you to stop. Stop and discover a new kind of spirituality, a renewed relationship with our Father that centers on being with Him, rather than achieving for him. It touches on a number of issues including the impact the past has on the present and making time with God constant throughout the day rather than just in a morning devotion. Don't just buy it - read it and take it to heart - could be a game changer for you . . .

Easy Reading - Yet Life Changing

Scazzero provides an insightful, thought provoking and frankly, life challenging text, engaging the reader on the topic of emotional and spiritual health and how they work in tandem. Scazzero's hard fought and brutally realised journey provides a beautiful skeleton on which the information, anecdotes and principles hang. Very applicable to all stages of life and world-views
