Unemployed mill worker Zoe Hart jumps at the opportunity to emigrate to British Columbia in 1863 to find a better life and be reunited with her brother, who fled from home after being accused of a crime.

Pastor to miners in the mountains, Abe Merivale discovers an abandoned baby during a routine visit to Victoria and joins efforts with Zoe, one of the newly arrived bride-ship women, to care for the infant. While there, he's devastated by the news from his fiancee in England that she's marrying another man.

With mounting pressure to find the baby a home, Zoe accepts a proposal from a miner of questionable character after he promises to help her locate her brother. Intent on protecting Zoe and frustrated by his failed engagement, Abe offers his own hand as groom. After a hasty wedding, they soon realize their marriage of convenience is not so convenient after all.

    Hedlund at her best

I am a big fan of Jody Hedlund's style and this book has been her best! It is a delightful story about dealing with the unexpected and making the best of your circumstances. The plot was interesting with romantic tension and believable characters. While this book would stand on its own, there are cameos from people you meet earlier in the series (I loved seeing characters later in a series to see what they are up to). \\nThere is a lovely theme of the blessings that can come from loving others, especially children, without judgement.

    A Heartwarming Romance

I love Jody Hedlund's writing, as she once again has written a very inspiring historical novel of hope, love and forgiveness. She reflects on God's will and leading in a persons life through the characters in this story. The impulsive marriage between Abe and Zoe evolves beautifully despite the many challenges and surprises they face. Zoe's resilient nature turns all the odds against her into opportunities. The Author gives a glimpse of the life of a missionary, through the character Abe, as he pastors to the miners up in the mountains of the colonies in Victoria. This is a wonderfully written novel that is engaging with splashes of humour, drama and interesting characters. A delight to read.
