This is an upper-level introduction to the most influential Protestant theologian of the 20th century by one of the leading young Barth scholars. "Barth: A Guide for the Perplexed" offers a concise but comprehensive introduction to the work of the most important Protestant theologian of the twentieth century. The first chapter of the book considers the life of Karl Barth and the context within which his theology was written. Thereafter, the chapters examine in turn the key theological loci which Barth treated in his magnum opus, the Church Dogmatics. These chapters therefore explore the doctrine of the Word of God, the doctrine of God, the doctrine of creation, Christology, pneumatology, and the Christian life. In each case, the key theological moves which Barth makes are first analysed and then evaluated in the light of external critique. The final chapter considers the legacy of the work of Barth, and offers suggestions for further reading. Continuum's Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging - or indeed downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.
