Dutch Calvinist theologian Herman Bavinck, a significant voice in the development of Protestant theology, remains relevant many years after his death. His four-volume *Reformed Dogmatics* is one of the most important theological works of the twentieth century.

James Eglinton is widely considered to be at the forefront of contemporary interest in Bavinck's life and thought. After spending considerable time in the Netherlands researching Bavinck, Eglinton brings to light a wealth of new insights and previously unpublished documents to offer a definitive biography of this renowned Reformed thinker.

The book follows the course of Bavinck's life in a period of dramatic social change, identifying him as an orthodox Calvinist challenged with finding his feet in late modern culture. Based on extensive archival research, this critical biography presents numerous significant and previously ignored or unknown aspects of Bavinck's person and life story. A black-and-white photo insert is included.

This volume complements other Baker Academic offerings on Bavinck's theology and ethics, which together have sold 90,000 copies.

    Definitive Biography, Exhaustively Researched

I wanted a carefully written biography to better understand this important theologian whose works have received a lot of attention in recent years through Tim Keller and others at TGC. \\n\\nEglington's offering is the product of his monumental research and reading of Bavinck (in Dutch). This work is no hagiography, nor is it buffered by fanciful narrative or speculations. This book has all the precision of a doctoral research piece (with 118 pages of notes and bibliography, more than 1/4 of the total book length); nonetheless, it is a highly readable biography that fully satisfied my purposes of understanding and contextualising Bavinck. \\n\\nNote that while this book proceeds in a broadly chronological order, it is categorised thematically in 5 parts:\\n\\n1. Roots\\n2. Student\\n3. Pastor\\n4. Professor in Kampen\\n5. Professor in Amsterdam\\n\\nThe author moves backward and forward in time in each section, which took me some time to adjust to as someone with no prior knowledge of Bavinck, his life or Dutch Christian context. \\n\\nIf you are looking for a treasury of choice devotional quotes from Bavinck's works (mostly contained in several daunting volumes), you will not find them here. You will find a list of his essays, speeches, articles and works as well as previous biographical treatments (with which Eglington often interacts). \\n\\nThe expense of this item may deter someone searching for a casual biography.
