When her mother became bedridden and her father bailed on the family, Sophie became a second mother to her twin brother, Seth, and younger sister, Jenna. Sophie supported her siblings through college, putting aside her own dream--opening a book shop in Hideaway Cove, a North Carolina beach town they frequented as children. Now it's finally time for Sophie to bring her dream to fruition. Seth has graduated from NCU, the family house is sold, and Jenna is set to marry her college sweetheart in Hideaway Cove. But the destination wedding will also reunite Sophie with best man Aiden Maddox, her high school sweetheart who left her without a backward glance to run an extreme sporting business in Florida.
Much to Sophie's chagrin, seeing Aiden again resurrects all those old feelings. But she's not about to give him the time of day. The wedding goes smoothly, if one can dismiss the low-key tension between Sophie and Aiden, and Sophie can turn her focus to establishing the bookshop of her dreams.
But then the advancing hurricane strands Aiden in Hideaway Cove, and with the hotels booked to capacity he begs Sophie to put him up until the storm passes. As the two ride out the weather, past hurts are put to rest and old feelings rise to the surface. But can Sophie trust Aiden to stick around? And does daredevil Aiden have the courage to risk his heart?

This book was so sweet! To the point that it almost had me crying in a few scenes because of how beautiful they were. I loved Sophie's journey, even if it was hard to read at times because of how hard she was on herself. If you love bookshops, small towns, beach reads, second-chance romances, books set around family, or deep faith journeys, definitely read this one. It's beautiful.

Great holiday read
I took this one away with me and thoroughly enjoyed a sweet simple getaway read. That's not to say it didn't cover some deep issues, and I enjoyed watching as Sophie learnt some tough lessons about herself and how she had allowed others to treat her. It was wonderful to see change happening and characters moving beyond ingrained attitudes and behaviour patterns. The slow-boiling romance helped a lot too. Aiden was a fine hero who faced some shadows in his own life. Bookshop by the Sea stood out as having more Christian content than the 'Christian fiction' I've been reading lately, which was a refreshing change. Highly recommended.

Light, Sweet, Enjoyable read
An ok book I read for a book club. Not my usual choice. Much lighter than I normally like, it was sweet though. The ending had some good wisdom and lessons learnt. I didn't really buy into or feel the connection between Aidan and Sophie. A light, enjoyable read but lacked any real excitement.
