The most important questions anyone can ask are: Why was Jesus Christ crucified? Why did he suffer so much? What has this to do with me? Finally, who sent him to his death? The answer to the last question is that God did. Jesus was God's Son. The suffering was unsurpassed, but the whole message of the Bible leads to this answer.

The central issue of Jesus' death is not the cause, but the meaning - God's meaning. That is what this book is about. John Piper has gathered from the New Testament fifty reasons. Not fifty causes, but fifty purposes - in answer to the most important question that each of us must face: What did God achieve for sinners like us in sending his Son to die?

Meaning of Jesus' death for believers

John Piper digged into the Bible and has articulated the meaning of Jesus' death very well in this book. I have read this book more than twice and found fresh new revelation of Jesus' work on the cross each time. I would greatly recommend this book for every Christian, because the truths in this book are very foundational to our faith.

    Theologically-Rich Devotional

This brief, yet theologically rich book by Piper offers devotions in very brief (most around two pages), readable chapters. \\r\\n\\r\\nUnlike other devotionals, this doesn't contain long stories or anecdotes. Rather, a Bible verse or two is laid out then unpacked by Piper with implications for how Christ's life, death and resurrection impact Christians. \\r\\nBecause Piper is covering 50 areas, the implications are broad. Each of the chapters could be used as a springboard for further study as well. \\r\\n\\r\\nThis is a easy reading, valuable resource to understand a great breadth of theological implications of the work of Christ.

    Solid Biblical Book

I love Piper's books because they are biblical and deep and this one is no exception. I particularly like this one because it expounds the meaning of Christ' death for us, the different aspects of our salvation, i. e. justification, sanctification, redemption, adoption, reconciliation. This is a good book for believers and non believers.

    Brief readings suitable for groups

Piper examines Scripture and comes up with fifty reasons for the death of Christ which he examines in two pages each. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe chapters were to the point and, obviously, brief and so handy to pick up for a few minutes and put down again. They also could be handy for family or classroom devotions. \\r\\n\\r\\nAs a book to sit and read, however, I felt it was a bit dry. Due to the breadth of the topic and the brevity of the book, none of the reasons are examined in depth which makes the book difficult to engage with. It would, perhaps, be better suited to a new Christian, especially if it was read at one chapter a day as part of a personal devotional time. \\r\\n\\r\\nI would be happy to use it in family devotions or our home schooling, but I wouldn't recommend it as a book to read.

Amazing Truth explained - a must have book

I have both the paperback and audio of Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came To Die and believe this book is the most important book in my library besides my Bibles. In short 2 page messages on 50 statements of why Jesus came to die [and this is only a selection of reasons Jesus came to die], I've found incredible depth of revelation from easy and quick to read chapters - it is so deep yet so easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to every believer to keep on their bookshelves [I've got a copy in my handbag - great when waiting for appointments] but I feel you need a second copy you can lend to others. I've listened to the audio version 4 times now and some chapters up to 10 times and it brings home the truths and gets into your memory for easy recall. Great for listening in the car and on an MP3 player. I highly recommend both the book and the audio to everyone, new or seasoned believers.
