Although scholars have for centuries studied the historical Jesus -- since Reimarus in the late 1700s -- only recently has this discipline been challenged and even enriched by archaeological research. This book specifically asks and answers these questions: What does archaeology tell us about the life of Jesus? How and in what ways do archaeological discoveries help us reconstruct and understand the life and teachings of Jesus, son of Joseph?

This work is a collection of scholarly essays by specialist authors, many of whom worked recently (before 2005, 2006) and directly in excavations at Bethsaida, Capernaum, Nazareth, and Jerusalem. The main theme of the book is to examine how archaeology 'touches' the life and world of Jesus. Essay topics range from 'Did Jesus Attend the Synagogue?' to 'Jesus and Resurrection Faith in Light of Jewish Texts' to 'The Christian Apocrypha and Archaeology' and much more. I found the essay on the examination of the archaeological evidence for places described or mentioned in John's Gospel particularly interesting given the historical skepticism that is focused on this gospel. The essay provided strong support for the historicity of John's gospel. Also included is a handful of black-and-white photographs (colour would be nicer), a selected bibliography, an index of scripture and other ancient texts, and a glossary. Overall, this is the definitive text about what the latest archaeological findings (up to 2005, 2006) tell us of Jesus and the time in which he lived.
