In this book, W. Robert Godfrey, who is President of Westminster Theological Seminary in California, introduces the reader to an important sixteenth-century reformer John Calvin. Godfrey's treatment of Calvin is both biographical as well as theological. Besides providing us with a masterful overview of Calvin's life from his conversion to his ministry in Strassburg and Geneva, Godfrey also invites the reader to look at Calvin's views on worship, the sacraments, predestination, education, the training of ministers, and church-state relations. One entire chapter is also devoted to Calvin's Institutes. Calvin's greatness and contributions as a reformer, theologian, biblical scholar and pastor-counselor were celebrated. At the same time, however, he was very much human with not a few weaknesses (e. g. , he had a temper). For the reader who is unacquainted with but interested in John Calvin's life and ministry, Godfrey's introduction is masterful and helpful. Highly recommended!

An interesting introduction to Calvin's work
When I purchased this book, I was expecting a biography of Calvin's life with some discussion of his theology. Instead this book is more a discussion of Calvin's theology with some insight into his life. Despite this, I found the book very interesting and quite readable. There are extensive quotes from Calvin's writings that reveal some aspects of his personality that are rarely acknowledged. Though the author is sympathetic to Calvin's theology and methods, the author still gives a fairly balanced and honest perspective on Calvin and his works. \\r\\nI would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding some of Calvin's more important theological views with some insight into his personality. If you want to know more about the events in Calvin's life and times, I would probably look elsewhere.
