This excellent book by Foster and Beebe ought to be read by every Christian who longs for God. To satisfy this longing, the Christian church has a long and rich tradition to help us. Looking at how the church's saints have pursued their devotion to God, Foster and Beebe identify seven primary paths of devotion to God. These are: (1) the right ordering of our love for God, (2) the spiritual life as journey, (3) the recovering of knowledge of God lost in the fall, (4) intimacy with Jesus Christ, (5) the right ordering of our experiences of God, (6) action and contemplation, and (7) divine ascent. Under every path, Foster and Beebe draw on some representative core texts on spirituality to help the reader on their spiritual journey. Reading a summary of each of these texts, the reader gets exposed to great Christians like Origen of Alexandria, Augustine of Hippo, Bernard of Clairvaux, Blaise Pascal, Gregory the Great, John of the Cross and so on - a great feast for both the soul and mind! Reading this book, one cannot help but be challenged, inspired and helped to journey close to the heart of God. Highly recommended!
