Martin Luther viewed the family as the core of education. He considered education obtained from schooling as secondary. The head of the family is responsible for the religious instruction of his children and servants for the service of God. In everything else, the commandment of order and discipline of the family is a mundane matter outside of the church. Luther insists that the academic schools be replaced with Christian schools. The schools in the Middle Ages had a religious temperament. The students participated in the worship services or intervened with their singing.
