Updated Reading Guides with the much improved NAB Revised Edition
The updated Reading Guides for one of the few Catholic study bibles out there are excellent. The NAB Revised Edition is much improved from the previous edition with the removal of words that are essentially out of place in today's society (the main culprit is the word """"holocaust"""" which was used extensively in the previous edition's translation of the Old Testament when talking about a burnt offering, we know it's use today is highly offensive to our Jewish brothers and sisters who have a very different understanding of that word as it pertains to the Shoah). Typefaces are well chosen by OUP and the layout is conducive to reading and study. One thing however is a lack of other bindings available apart from the paperback binding that OUP uses (a personal bugbear). As for the NAB's study notes, they have more of an academic tone to them rather than pastoral or doctrinal which is standard across all NABRE editions. Some of the notes reflect biblical criticism positions that I do not favour, however the text of the NABRE is still good to read. For those of you who aren't Catholic, this volume should be used in conjunction with Ignatius Press' """"Ignatius Catholic Study Bible"""" edited by Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch and """"The Navarre Bible"""" if you are looking to get an understanding of how Catholics interpret and understanding Scripture.
