Beautiful edition for devotional reading and journalling
From the outside, the gilded embossed black leathersoft cover coupled with the patterned gold gilding of the text block already impresses the eye. Upon opening up the smyth-sewn text block, it opens flat at Genesis and the slightly off-white/cream coloured paper makes the black text (this is not a red letter edition) stand out on the page. The typeface used is designed by 2K Denmark who also did the typesetting of this NRSV-CE edition. The same typeface is also used on Catholic Bible Press' editions of the NABRE too. The biblical text is line-matched throughout but what makes this an exceptionally readable bible is the text size, the line-matching and the beautifully opaque Bible paper which only has the slight hint of ghosting to my eyes. The 500+ illustrated woodcuts sprinkled throughout this BIble are beautiful and placed at appropriate locations within the text too. A bonus is that due to the illustrations, the vast majority of the Bible has wide margins which would make this a perfect Bible for self-annotations or journalling as well. Two wide and long double sided satin ribbons (black and gold) along with a concise glossary/concordance and Zondervan's standard bible maps complete this edition. It's a large Bible, but it is well suited to times of devotional reading where one can savour God's Word and the illustrations. Would have loved to see this come in a cloth over board binding in addition to the bindings HCCP chose for this Bible. Warmly recommended.
