Old Wives Tales

A book that will encourage, inspire and challenge you. I read it as part of a bookclub and it made for great discussion. Each story causes you to reflect on your own life in different ways and is followed by a short passage of scripture to reflect on and several questions to provide additional reflection if you wish (I highly recommend it!). \\r\\n\\r\\nThe stories are real and include some excerpts from real letters and journals. This provided a real point of connection and authenticity (although I personally found the Old English in the excepts challenging to read at times - it has never been one of my strengths unfortunately, however I know others who love it!)\\r\\n\\r\\nI really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.

I bought this book expecting some lightly encouraging stories to read before bed. I did not expect to be gripped by the stories, keeping me up until I found out how these 18th century wives tales turned out! Each tale reads as a balanced, historical account - with the aim of highlighting a particular area of the Christian faith. Following each entry is a biblical reflection with questions to help us learn from these witnesses and grow in our own faith. I found each bible passage a really helpful reflection, not just a forced response. I was certainly challenged to consider the privileges I have, and how I might use the gifts and resources God has given me for his glory
