Reading Paul

This little book by Dr Michael Gorman is one of the best books I have read about the apostle Paul and his letters. It is a short introduction to Pauline studies, and is not a textbook for the study of Paul's letters (largely because of its brevity). It is, however, a good book that adds values to a textbook, and is a great resource for anyone who finds the theology of Paul a bit overwhelming. Gorman's ability to deal with the complex theology of Paul is demonstrated by his summary of the apostle's thought in one long sentence in the first chapter of his book. It is a long sentence indeed, for it covers almost one entire page. Yet it is easy to understand and full of insight. Some may disagree with Gorman because he does not seem to fully embrace a traditional reading of Paul. Yet one cannot deny the fact that Dr Gorman seeks to be faithful to Paul's letters, and treats them as God's authoritative inspired revelation. Indeed, many would find Gorman's reading of Paul refreshing and exceedingly helpful. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to pastors, theological students and others who love Paul's letters.
