Preaching today all too often tragically misses the point.
We've all heard sermons that sound more like a lecture, filling the head but not the heart. And we've all heard sermons tailored to produce an emotional experience, filling the heart but not the head. But biblical preaching both informs minds and engages hearts-giving it the power to transform lives. By the Spirit's grace, biblical preaching brings truth home from the heart of the preacher to the heart of the hearer.
Joel Beeke-a pastor and professor of preaching with over four decades of experience-explores the fundamental principles of Reformed experiential preaching, examining sermons by preachers from the past and bridging the historical gap by showing pastors what the preaching of God's life-transforming truth looks like today.

Some preaching is like the winter sun: it brightly illuminates the mind but leaves the heart cold. Other sermons are like cotton candy: they taste sweet but contain no substantial nutrients. Biblical sermons, however, need both heat and substance-a conviction at the core of the great Reformed tradition of experiential preaching. Reformed experiential preaching not only informs minds, but also engages hearts and transforms the conduct of hearers. This robust treatment of Reformed experiential preaching by Joel Beeke-a pastor and professor of preaching with over 4 decades of experience-explores the heart of Reformed preaching, examining sermons by preachers from the Reformation and bridging the historical gap by showing pastors what the preaching of this life-transforming truth looks like today.

The book is broken into three parts: Part 1 discussed what Reformed preaching is; essentially, expositional and experiential preaching that is doctrinal, experimental and practical. Or in other words, from head to heart. Part 2 looks at Reformed preaching in a practical way by providing a brief biography of select preachers from the 16th century up to the 20th century and briefly analysing their sermons, but also how some preached and emphasised particular doctrines. Part 3 focused on particular exhortations from following the thrust of the text and its emphasis to preaching holiness in a balanced manner, etc. \\n\\nOverall, the book was solid in content. However, some parts were dragged out too long unnecessarily or they were too repetitive. The book is also clearly intended for beginners; however, refreshing for those more seasoned in homiletics.

Excellent
This is an excellent book. It was a joy to read. \\nIt is split into three sections which are quite distinct. \\nI very much enjoyed the 2nd second which focused on various preachers and how they preached. \\nBeeke writes very clearly, naturally and pastorally. This truly does present the every aspect of what preaching should be like.

Comprehensive and Relevant
A comprehensive book on what reformed preaching is. I love how it reminds me of the centrality of preaching. Also, it differentiates between preaching to the head and to the heart. \\nHalf of this book illustrates what reformed experiential preaching is by showing people in church history that embodied this type of preaching. From Zwingli, Calvin, Bunyan, and others. \\nI find this book to be a good reminder for me as a preacher on what is important: preach Christ from my heart to the heart of God's people.

A MUST READ.
A must have, if you want to understand Reformed Preaching and its experiential doctrine that the good old puritans possessed, this is a book for you. Calvinism is brought to the centre where it worships God with all of its heart, mind, soul and strength.
