Among born-again Christians, 27 percent have experienced divorce as compared to 24 percent in the general population. Yet no consensus exists among evangelicals on their views of remarriage, leaving many Christians confused. This single volume summarizes and explores three main evangelical views: no remarriage, remarriage after adultery or desertion, and remarriage for a variety of reasons. Each of the three contributors offers his point of view succinctly with biblical support, and each interacts with the others to help readers come to their own conclusions.

An Important Book to be Carefully Read and Studied by Every Christian

In this very helpful and instructive book, three contributors explore and discuss three views on remarriage after divorce. Gordon Wenham maintains that there should be no remarriage after divorce; William A. Heth argues for remarriage after adultery or desertion; and, Craig S. Keener takes the view that remarriage is permissible not only on the grounds of adultery and desertion but also potentially abuse. After every contributor has set forth his arguments and position, the other two offer responses. This makes for a very interesting and stimulating study on a sensitive and painful issue that plagues not only society but also the Christian Church. The contributors' approach to the issue is biblical, pastoral and practical. Whilst they maintain a high view of marriage and discourage divorce, they recognize we live in a fallen world where divorce and remarriage will take place, even and sadly amongst Christians. The contributors contend that churches need to instruct believers in what constitutes healthy biblical marriage and also to come alongside those who suffer great pain or guilt from divorce and remarriage. Questions like whether divorced and remarried Christians can assume leadership in the church are also helpfully discussed. This is a great book which ought to be carefully read and studied by pastors and parishioners.
