The book of Psalms occupies a unique place in Scripture, being both the Word from God and words to God from His people. Unfortunately, psalm singing no longer plays an integral part of worship in most evangelical churches. In this book, thirteen well-respected scholars urge the church to rediscover the treasure of the Psalms as they examine the history of psalm singing in the church, present biblical reasons for the liturgical practice, and articulate the practical value it provides us today. Endorsement This volume explores the rich historical, biblical, theological, and pastoral contexts that inform a commitment to the prayerful use of biblical psalms in Christian worship today. The book challenges those who sing psalms exclusively to understand the strengths of their tradition. It challenges those who sing hymns primarily to reconsider their neglect of the Psalms. Above all, the volume invites all readers to reconsider the beauty of biblically shaped prayer and the astonishing grace offered us by a God who not only calls us to offer worship but also guides and inspires us in learning how to worship. Sing Psams

This was a formative book in my journey to come to psalm singing convictions. Many authors whose work I was familiar with here give a testimony to the worth and value of recovering psalm singing in the worship of God. This book tries to give modern calvinists who either have come to the doctrines of grace or those in long standing confessional churches where the practice has fallen out of use to recover this ancient piety and practice. While this was the norm early on in the reformed branch of the reformation for a couple of centuries it slowly became eclipsed by uninspired hymn singing. Some communions departed from the practice earlier like the calvinistic baptists while others like the Scottish presbyterians are still at it more or less. Do pick up this book if for nothing less than a better appreciation of the biblical psalms. Who knows you may be moved by the Spirit of God who inspired these songs to start singing them for your own personal devotion. See 1650 Psalter App for help.
