Almost half of the global population of 7.2 billion people in 2013-14 was estimated to be female. This book is about women. More specifically, it is about women and Islam.

It does not seek to sensationalize the subject matter, although some information may seem that way to any reader exposed to it for the first time. Nor should it be seen as an attempt to moralize about any practices within Islam or how followers of that religion may regard or treat non-Muslim women. It simply records widespread practice and the authoritative religious texts that validate many of these practices.

It also seeks to motivate the reader to engage with Muslims in society so that God's love can heal and transform their world through practical actions of Christian grace.

    Hard hitting

I think it is hard for people in the West to imagine the violence women experience in Islam and criticism of Islam is not tolerated. I used to wonder how women could raise sons to be horrible, but when a girl is a disappointment from the day of her birth and reminded of her worthlessness every day thereafter, she lacks hope. I wish this book had more suggestions of how to help at the end.

    Very important reading

In a number of well-documented and meaty chapters, Robinson looks at the various ways in which women are oppressed by Islam. Whether it is Female Genital Mutilation, forced coverings, honour killings, child brides, second class citizenship, or religious rape (yes, that exists in Islam), women are treated abysmally in this religion. \\r\\n\\r\\nConsider just one issue which has made at least some news headlines of late. In the UK where the Muslim population is said to double each decade, Muslim paedophile gangs had been at work there for decades. Robinson cites a 300 page research report on this which documents all the horrific abuse, rape and torture. \\r\\n\\r\\nFacts, figures, data and research presented in the book are supplemented by numerous personal horror stories of women being treated so very poorly in Islam. It makes for frightening reading, but it necessary reading. We all owe Stuart Robinson a great debt in producing this urgent wake-up call. \\r\\n\\r\\nAs Elizabeth Kendall says in her foreword,""""The events reported in this book may disturb you and even move you to tears. But if change is to occur, reality must first be faced. """" Quite so, and the reality of how women fare under Islam is expertly documented here.
