The Names of God

If you want something easy to read, plugs you into history, and comes from a pastoral heart, then Marilyn Hickey's version of the names of God, will do you good. She encourages and exhorts. She weaves throughout anecdotes and poignant analogies. Its like Marilyn is talking to you personally and yet here is a straight forward testament to our God's varied covenant names, presented in their original context from the Old Testament. Perhaps, one thing that took from its overall appeal for me was giving the Hebrew without always making the most of the language; case in point - Jehovah Jireh, the significance of 'seeing ahead' (Hebrew) fitting with its meaning of provision, was not brought out. I felt also the verses at the end of each chapter, provided some, but not always direct relevancy to the 'name'. Yet overall, its an informative read, that isolates the uniqueness of each name without repetitive bible passages to do this. With its valuable depth across the pastoral fore and laying out the 'big picture' chronology of the Old Testament - you are looking at layers of meaning in each page- all with a good flow of thought. \\nSuitable for a new or seasoned Christian who doesn't want anything theological.
