Discomfitting
This was quite a meaty read - and a far cry from the usually light-weightness of Amish fiction. I was quite disappointed when I discovered that The Return jumped twenty-five years since the second book in the Amish Beginnings series, although there were plenty of familiar characters once I got reading, along with lots of new ones. The Indian part of the story, although no doubt based on historical truth, was very disturbing and graphically described. The disturbing nature was only intensified by the basis in fact. We know these awful things went on, but it still shocks us to read about them. And, of course, there can be no happy ending when you are reading about such persecution. But Suzanne Woods Fisher did a fine job of working the horror in around developing romance. Caleb was extremely likable and the true hero of the book. The historical notes at the end were very interesting.
