Dr Hart used detailed questionnaires (as shown in an appendix), covering a wide range of male sex issues, in a data-collecting survey specifically focussed on ""committed Christian"" men. Or at least, ""good"" men who basically want to live responsibly in regard to sex matters. Scientifically focussing on this segment of the male population was significant and probably unique. Dr Hart heavily critiques several other well known studies as being biassed due to unrepresentative sampling, or conclusions not adequately supported by their research data.

Having read this book closely, I found it most helpful to see masculine sex-related matters in a less legalistic or guilt-reactive way. Not that a more permissive alternative is promoted. Just that well-intentioned, earnest men can often feel they have some kind of personal ""dark secret"" issue (past or current, eg masturbation) that cannot be spoken of to anyone. By finding such an issue included in his book, can be a surprise! And not just ""mentioned"", but fully canvassed by his survey questionnaire, the responses (more than 600) analysed, then the resulting statistics presented in graphical formats. To see a ""dark secret"" item not only included, but sometimes common within relative large percentages of those surveyed, is potentially liberating.

I don't know of any other book on men's sexuality issues that comes in the same league as this one. Not only a comprehensive coverage of issues, but with academic rigour and…

His research is presented in a very easy to read manner, and allows sensitive and vulnerable topics to be discussed in a safe and natural way. He refers to Scripture throughout. He covers areas such as: the nature of sexuality, 'normal' desires, frequency and expectations, needs and reasons for dissatisfaction, changes with age, marital status, factors relating to arousal, fantasizing, pornography and religious influences on male sexuality - all from accumulated research. This book aims to understand male sexuality and 'what men want' as sexual beings, created by God, and offers keys to how men can develop their sexuality in a healthy and God honouring way.
