My main takeaway from Johnson’s book was that theology ought to be pursued within the context of a life of discipleship to Christ, because “the practices of discipleship enable and enrich our pursuit of theological knowledge. ” Further, the practice of theology should never be divorced from the church. Rather, it should be pursued out of a desire to serve those in the church by pointing them to God. Despite the lack of coherence in some chapters, I found this to be a refreshing book with gems scattered throughout.
