**History takes on vivid life in the stunning first full-length installment of Tamera Alexander's new series, The Carnton Novels.**
On the night of November 30, 1864, a brutal battle in Franklin, Tennessee, all but decimates the Confederacy and nearly kills Captain Roland Ward Jones. A decorated Mississippi sharpshooter, Jones has a vision on the battlefield and, despite the severity of his wounds, believes his life will be spared. But a life without his leg, he can't abide. He compels Elizabeth "Lizzie" Clouston-governess to the McGavock family at the Carnton mansion-to intervene should the surgeon decide to amputate. True to her word, Lizzie speaks on his behalf and saves not only the captain's leg but also his life.
When a fourteen-year-old soldier dies in Lizzie's arms that night, the boy's final words, whispered with urgency, demand that Lizzie deliver them to their intended recipient. But all she has is the boy's first name. And, as she soon discovers, there's no record of him ever having enlisted. How can she set out alone across a land so divided by war and hatred to honor her pledge? Even more, does she dare accept Captain Jones's offer to accompany her? As he coalesces at Carnton, romance has blossomed between him and Lizzie-a woman already betrothed to a man she does not love.
From the pages of history and the personal accounts of those who endured the Battle of Franklin, Tamera Alexander weaves the real-life love letters between Captain Roland Ward Jones and Elizabeth Clouston into a story of unlikely romance first kindled amid the shadows of war.

I love the way Tamera Alexander weaves together a story and this tale is no different. Lizzie is put in a difficult situation where the wounded soldiers are being brought to the house where she is governess. Unused to seeing such violence, she soon becomes accustomed and is actually able to assist the doctor. Love blossoms between her a captain as she works to save his life. There is nothing quite so delicious as forbidden love, which in this case, Lizzie is engaged to a man she has no real affection for. A great read!

Historical Novel
This American historical novel captures the love, friendships, faith, pain, suffering and struggles of the civil war. The Author brings the past to life in this novel by including some real characters from that time in history. The characters develop and grow along with the storyline. This is a well researched novel where the Author has blended history with storytelling, and gives the reader a realistic glimpse of what life would have been like during the civil war.

Almost, but Not Quite
I love novels set during the American Civil War. All those hooped skirts combined with a good dash of southern courtesy. What's not to love? For that reason, I was looking forward to reading With This Pledge and jumped into it with high expectations. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The history was excellent, particularly with the understanding that these characters were based on real people. The author also dealt with the slavery issue with honesty and compassion (which appears to be a feature of her writing). There were also some parts of the story that held my attention and kept me turning pages. However, for the most part, I felt the story was dragged out way too far. The setting rarely moved beyond the walls of the Carnton Plantation, and the story became somewhat tedious. With This Pledge is no Gone With the Wind (and some would say that's a good thing). For me, it lacked the energy and vitality to sustain a book of this length.

Another fabulous story by Tamera Alexander
I haven't yet found a book by Tamera Alexander that I didn't love. This one is set during the American civil war and hashes out the complexity of the issues involved. I was sorry when it finished because I do not yet have a copy of the the next in the series!
