    Rainer Wields the Scalpel

Thom Rainer knows unhealthy churches. He's diagnosed deadly issues in hundreds of churches in the US, and in Autopsy of a Deceased Church, he brings that practical knowledge to bear on dying churches with the hope that it won't be too late. Sadly, the reasons churches die are all too similar. But there is hope! With Jesus, change is possible.

My one criticism is that Rainer's experience could have lead to a deeper consideration of what the Bible says about why the issues he identifies are so deeply rooted and how to address them Biblically, not just pragmatically.

Don't miss the sequel, Anatomy of a Revived Church.

    Cold, but calculated

As the title hints, this book isn't a happy journey. Looking back upon many failed churches, Thom carefully dissects the nature of churches and reveals how things go downhill. A very sobering read but a necessary one - much better a biopsy, emergency surgery, medication and a long recovery, than an autopsy, I say!

    No Fuss

While I wish this book was longer, I can appreciate it's simple and succinct nature. The author has sourced the information used to present his ideas from real life experience, none of which he is ashamed to share with very honest opinions most would word with more tact. The 'shock' serves the vision actually, to evaluate one's one church policies, procedures and culture to see if we can stave off the 'deceased' status for our future, often through drastic action. I was sad to read of some churches dying after receiving a prognosis and an encouragement to embrace change, and hope that every church body continues to be redeemed for His glory!
