A brief, helpful, sweeping overview of Christianity, written for those with some understanding of the faith.

A brief, helpful, sweeping overview of Christianity, written for those with some understanding of the faith.

Considering this book was first published in 1958, it is immensely readable and understandable. From Stott’s volumes in the Bible Speaks Today series, I have appreciated just how clearly he can express Biblical truths without pomp or unnecessary verbosity. It is the same here.

That said, I think this book will be most helpful for the person who is either a Christian and wants to learn more about their faith, or someone who has grown up in a Christian home and understands something of Christian terminology and doctrine. I would imagine that the atheist, agnostic, or anyone not familiar with what Christians believe about God and the gospel would find some things Stott takes for granted in his wording confusing. One example of this is Stott’s seeming assumption that the reader will agree that Scripture is inerrant.

Overall though, for the proper audience, this old book has priceless gems. From a defence of Christ’s resurrection to a call to holy living for believers, Stott has surveyed so many important topics in such a small book and eloquently and clearly put forward his case.
