We live in a world full of shiny distractions, faced with an onslaught of viral media constantly competing for our attention and demanding our affections. These ever-present visual "spectacles" can quickly erode our hearts, making it more difficult than ever to walk through life actively treasuring that which is most important and yet invisible: Jesus Christ. In a journalistic style, Tony Reinke shows us just how distracting these spectacles in our lives have become and calls us to ask critical questions about what we're focusing on. The book offers us practical steps to redirect our gaze away from the addictive eye candy of the world and onto the Ultimate Spectacle-leading to the joy and rest our souls crave.

    An Ironically Eye-opening Read

""""Never satisfied are the eyes of man"""" - this statement alone was enough to engage me. \\n\\nIt's a physically small book, but nonetheless packs a powerful sucker-punch to you the reader. In that way it feels like one giant footnote that expounds upon previous thoughts in his earlier book, '12 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You' (which I would recommend reading first!). \\n\\nThis book is much more of a deep-dive into the history of humanities insatiable eye-lusts but also arms the reader with more discernment that we most certainly need in our digital age. I love Tony's expository writing style and ability to balance cautionary tales and caring grace to the reader while arousing him to a higher focus - Christ himself. If you are looking for an intellectually insightful read into how we ended up here and allowed technology to slowly but surely consume us, then this is the perfect addition for you.

    Cultural commentary

I listened to this book on Christian Audio. \\nA large bulk of the book is spent on defining and explaining what spectacles are in the past and in our current age. \\nThe author emphasises that the means that God has given us to see the spectacle of Christ (the greatest spectacle in history) is through the word.
