Jesus called his disciples to leave their nets and boats and to follow him. In his gospel Matthew offers us an encounter with this same Jesus, the King. He presents the words and works of the Master in an easy-to-read, easy-to-learn form, around three great themes:
Jesus the Messiah, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies
Israel and the church, exposing the hypocrisy of the Jewish religious leaders
Jesus the King, 'Son of David', yet dying for his people

Matthew's gospel is an ideal starting-point for discovering the truth about Jesus.

Helpful Study on the Gospel of Matthew
I bought several volumes from the Crossway Bible Guides Series several years back. I only started using the volume on Matthew recently to guide my reading and study of Matthew. For every study unit, Dray helpfully summarizes the main point in a sentence. This is followed by some brief explanation including different views and interpretations when necessary. For more extensive treatments of difficult or controversial topics, these can be found in brief excursus scattered throughout the volume. Every study is also accompanied by questions for self-reflection. For a devotional study on biblical books or for the purpose of group study, this series would prove helpful.
