The writing style reminded me of Janette Oke, and there were a few 'telling' moments, but I thought them well used to bridge between important conversations. It didn't interrupt the flow of the story as much as showing would have. I loved the rich family tapestry, and the spiritual influences in Meg's life were touching. I didn't expect to love this book as much as I did. I prefer romance, and there wasn't much of that. However, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Meg grow up both in life and in the Lord. I was sad to turn the last page because I wasn't ready to leave my new, dear friend. A read that settles deep into your heart and makes you want the book to never end.

Down by the Water
I really enjoyed Jo-Anne Berthelsen's latest work of fiction, Down by the Water, which follows the story of historical character, artist Meg, through the joys and heartbreak of marriage, family, loss and friendship. As Meg struggles with family heartbreak, she comes to meet God in sweet and surprising ways. I found I experienced a sense of God's presence and nearness as I read. Recommended if you enjoy historical fiction, female protagonists, stories of finding faith, and paintings galore! Trigger warning and Spoiler warning: There is a story of miscarriage in the book.

Engaging themes
\\nHaving finished Down By The Water, I realise it is a book to stay with me as I consider a number of significant themes woven through the story. The characters faced the challenges of life with different perspectives and ways of coping. Seeing things through their eyes as the story unfolded was enriching.

Down by the Water
Jo-Anne Berthelsen's latest novel, Down by the Water, is an honest portrayal of Meg's journey through tragedy and discouragement to growth and forgiveness. Set in the beautiful surroundings of South Eastern Queensland in the early part of the last century, the novel clearly shows the value of mentoring relationships as well as how nurturing creativity can lead to spiritual and emotional growth. This novel is a must for anyone wanting to integrate their creativity and their spiritual journey, as well as those who are wondering where God is when tragedy strikes.
