ESV Study Bible Black (Black Letter Edition)

After having read and used various study bibles previously, I cannot recommend the ESV Study Bible highly enough. The translation itself is faithful to the original language, being a word-for-word, rather than thought-for-thought translation. This instils confidence in the reader, knowing the words chosen convey what the author of the time indented his original audience to hear, as opposed to what people of today may find easier to understand (not that there is difficulty in understanding this translation). \\r\\n\\r\\nThe study notes help the reader understand the meaning of the text, without having to refer to multiple commentaries, Strongs' or the Hebrew lexicon. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe 240 full-color maps and illustrations also add a richness of understanding, as they help provide a similar (although not comparable) insight as going on biblical tour, for they reconstruct temples, priestly garments, items of ritualistic worship and much more. The maps also help the reader understand the locations and geographical significance of specific events, as well as identify where each book was written. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe introduction to each book (Author, Date, and Recipients; Theme and Purpose; Key Themes; Outline; Setting) contains a wealth of relevant scholarly information to help the reader interpret the text within context and understand the Lord's purpose for writing the book.

The ESV translation is exactly what our generation needs. \\r\\n\\r\\nIt is simply an excellent translation, while maintaining good English. \\r\\n\\r\\nYou'll find yourself wrapped up in the words, eagerly desiring more and more. How sweet are the words of God!\\r\\n\\r\\nPlus, as another reviewer said, the study notes are very thoughtful, sound and helpful for Christians of all ages. \\r\\n\\r\\nExcellent!

I have purchased seven Study Bibles since becoming a Christian, If I had purchased the ESV Study Bible when I first became a Christian I have little doubt it would still be the only Study Bible I owned. \\r\\n\\r\\nSingle column Scripture text is far superior; the notes are informative beyond compare and the Hebrew/Greek word notes are extremely helpful. \\r\\n\\r\\nI find the denominational neutrality of the notes a welcome suprise. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe theologically and doctrinally sound articles at the back of the Bible will I have no doubt be a perpetual reference source of inestimable value. \\r\\n\\r\\nEvery scholar of the written word will bring themselves no end of spiritual/academic benefit and blessing if he or she equips themselves with this new benchmark in Study Bibles. \\r\\n\\r\\nHis friend & yours. \\r\\nBrad Small.
