Many people react negatively to the word theology, believing that it involves dry, fruitless arguments about minute points of doctrine. Yet as Dr. R.C. Sproul argues, everyone is a theologian. Any time we think about a teaching of the Bible and strive to understand it, we are engaging in theology. Therefore, it is important that we put the Bible's varied teachings together in a systematic fashion, using proper, time-tested methods of interpretation so as to arrive at a theology that is founded on truth.

That is precisely what Dr. Sproul does in Everyone's a Theologian: An Introduction to Systematic Theology. This book is anything but a dry discussion of minute points of doctrine. Dr. Sproul, demonstrating his trademark ability to make complex subjects easy to understand, surveys the basic truths of the Christian faith, reminding us once more of what God is like and of what He has done for His people in this world and the next.

    Good for budding theologians

Loved going through this book in a club at church. As someone who grew with a church background, did some linguistic courses in uni and loves reading, I found it was the perfect level for me. It's heavy on etymology but once you get past that wall, it's great.

Some people I read with were newer to church or did not have English as a first language and found it a bit of a hard slog.

I naturally tend to read books to grow in doxology rather than theology so this was helpful in building a stronger foundation in topics I had a very shallow understanding of.

    Good Intro to ST

As with many of Sproul's teaching this had its beginning as sermon lectures given at his study centre Ligonier. The strength of work is that it will give a free flowing logical unfolding of the main tenants of the Christian faith. In places Sproul deviates into historical background or some pressing church controversy which gives context to the teaching he is presenting. but he tries to be brief and concise. Some topics are covered more thoroughly while others may leave reader wanting. For an introduction it still spans 350 pages. Worth a look especially for new Christians it will definitely provide them with a solid foundation to build on.

    Reliable but uneven

Sproul introduces the major areas of Christian doctrine. The strength of the book is it is rooted in biblical convictions. However, a key weakness is that it treats topics unevenly. Some topics are well covered, whereas some chapters seem to focus on side issues without getting to the main point. Overall this book might be helpful as supplementary reading, but not useful as a first introduction.
