After their home in Sendirian City burns to cinders, Eden Fittell gets a job to support her family. But the city is being stalked by the freakish Izrod, who is kidnapping people off the street. When Eden starts work at the government's Archives, will she be safe? And what if they can't stop Izrod? Will his crimes spell the end of Sendirian City?

Booklist (09/15/2024):
Grades 9-12 From Australia comes this darkly dystopian story of 17-year-old Eden, who, in the wake of the Unbidden Conflict, lives in squalor in Sendirian City. Her life changes when she is hired as a junior keeper at the city's vast archives. It changes more dramatically when she is kidnapped by Izrod, a monster of a man who terrorizes Sendirian City by stealing people off the street for crime boss Kore Luddan to experiment on. Captured, Eden is injected with various fluids and finds she now has the ability to see behind people's facades to the real person underneath. This is dramatized when she sees Izrod face to face and finds him to be not the monster he is said to be but instead trustworthy, safe, noble and good and, yes, hot! Eden with Izrod, whose real name is Leon, join the underground to foil Kore's plan to poison the city's water. Will they succeed? Despite some improbabilities and anomalies, Stringer's story is a good page-turner that is sure to please fans of the genre. COPYRIGHT(2024) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
