This simple, true story of a man and his dog is also a parable of profound spiritual truth. Lass, thought to be untrainable, instead becomes a magnificent and valuable sheep dog. What you see is not always what you get and this true story of a man and his dog is no exception. Woven just under the surface of this simple parable, Keller presents profound spiritual truth. It is the story of Lass, a worthless animal thought to be untrainable, who becomes a magnificent and valuable sheepdog not terribly unlike how God's love can transform our worst characteristics into blessings that serve to further His Kingdom. Allow yourself to see Biblical truth in this classic tale of what can happen when you yield to the Master.

    Short and Insightful

I've just re-read this book after several years. It is mercifully short. I completed the last read in under 2 hours and I'm not a particularly fast reader. Whilst it may not sound like a particularly insightful book, at least for some, W. Phillip Keller, the author, draws some very important, insightful and encouraging illustrations from one story of a dog he rescued and trained to be his sheepdog. \\n\\nThese illustrations are quite profound and helpful as they are placed into a Christian context between an individual and God. There's a suprising number of parallels Keller presents yet none feel contrived or a 'stretch' but rather show, as far as any parallel can go, aspects of the Christian life. \\n\\nWhilst there isn't a plethora of Biblical references, there certainly are some, this book does well to invoke thought and rememberance of scriptural truths. \\n\\nI'm not sure of the reception by a non-christian as it seems quite centred around the Christian's relationship with the Lord. However perhaps someone who is interested in Christianity may benefit, particularly in regards to being set free from the bondage of sin. \\n\\nCertainly recommend this book as it is mercifully short and is quite insightful.

    Simple yet profound

Simple and to the point, this little book tells the story of a sheep farmer and the lessons he learnt from the battered and abused dog he rescued and taught to love and trust again. The story might be simple but the comparisons between us as battered people and God as the ultimate shepherd, are profound. Great as a gift for friends, Christian or not.
