In this gripping portrait of war and its aftermath from bestselling author Lynn Austin, a young woman searches for the truth her childhood friend won't discuss after returning from World War II, revealing a story of courage, friendship, and faith.

Peggy Serrano couldn't wait for her best friend to come home from the war. But the Jimmy Barnett who returns is much different from the Jimmy who left, changed so drastically by his experience as a medic in Europe that he can barely function. When he attempts the unthinkable, his parents check him into the VA hospital. Peggy determines to help the Barnetts unravel what might have happened to send their son over the edge. She starts by contacting Jimmy's war buddies, trying to identify the mysterious woman in the photo they find in Jimmy's belongings.

Seven years earlier, sensing the rising tide against her people, Gisela Wolff and her family flee Germany aboard the passenger ship St. Louis, bound for Havana, Cuba. Gisela meets Sam Shapiro on board and the two fall quickly in love. But the ship is denied safe harbor and sent back to Europe. Thus begins Gisela's perilous journey of exile and survival, made possible only by the kindness and courage of a series of strangers she meets along the way, including one man who will change the course of her life.

    Raw and Real

This novel is written in the first person so you really feel a part of the story as you are reading. We first meet Peggy, who has been overlooked and put down her whole life except by one family, the Barnett's who have been with her through it all. She is now trying to help them in their time of need after their son, Jimmy has returned for WWII damaged and desolate. As Peggy is unravelling the mystery surrounding Jimmy's depression, we also go back in time and learn the story of Gisela, a Jew, trying to survive the Nazi occupation with her family. \\nThe two stories are remarkable in themselves, but I love that the two histories blend together so beautifully. I was shocked and awed by learning of the plight of the ship St Louis, which was an actual historical event. \\nReaders will definitely enjoy this intricate and heartbreaking story.

    Profound Historical Novel

A profound historical novel by Lynn Austin. The author has captured the gripping lives of Gisela and Sam during WWII and their courage and faith to survive. Readers will be moved by Peggy's search for the truth to help her friend, Jimmy to recover from battle fatigue after serving as a medic in the war. The main characters in this novel were very realistic and they will capture your heart. This moving story of love, courage, friendship and faith gives a realistic glimpse of what life would have been like during WWII.
