    Necessary and useful

As with all of Chan's books this is a great resource and easy read. The format of this book leads to great discussion and demands that you do something about God's call to disciple.

    Challenge Accepted!

I have read a number of books on this topic and this one strikes me as the easiest to grasp. Many others are wrought with heavy theology and often serve as great """"teaching material"""" but don't challenge the individual specifically to apply and take action. \\r\\n\\r\\nChan's motive cannot be questioned; he wants all believers to take seriously the call to train and disciple others. His methodology is to release EVERY believer in this great work, a concept that will be found objectionable by most. I think his concepts need to be taken with a grain of salt and applied in our ministerial contexts with prayerful meditation and a sure resolve of character.

    Problematic reading

Chan is driven about the need for discipleship. This book demands that we do something about what his previous book 'Crazy Love' talked to us about. For Chan, discipleship can be done alone or in a corporate (church) setting. I do have problems with the book, however, especially as someone who has been part of a 'discipling' system. For example, Chan would have a young disciple being a disciple-maker regardless of his or her maturity in the faith. I have personally seen this approach played out to devastating effects in my former congregation and to the group of churches I used to belong. Entrusting to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others (2 Timothy 2:2) is not for everyone, and definitely not for the spiritually immature. I appreciate that Chan is trying to move people out of the perceived complacency of their faith, but I think that discipling on an individual basis is fraught with danger, unless there is significant teachingtraining given.
