This 21st Century Edition builds on the strengths of the previous three: - a one-volume commentary on the whole Bible by an international team of contributors - general articles on what the Bible is and how to read it - an introduction to each Bible book - commentaries dividing each book into sections for ease of reference
Designed to meet the needs of today, the *New Bible Commentary* is based on the simplicity and clarity of the NIV text, and makes use of recent international scholarship: 80% of the articles are entirely new and the rest have been rewritten. New maps, diagrams, charts and tables illuminate the text, and further reading lists are included with each article.
*"IVP is to be congratulated on producing this edition of the New Bible Commentary. I warmly commend it to all those wanting to understand the Bible in greater depth."* - George Carey, formerly Archbishop of Canterbury

While the entry for each passage is brief, owing to the nature of having a whole bible commentary in one volume, this is overall a very helpful resource. I have found this useful on various occasions when reading difficult passages, or simply wanting to read someone else’s interpretation of a passage to help reflect more deeply upon it. Highly recommended for anyone reading the Bible.

A great whole-Bible commentary
In reading the previously written reviews you get a pretty good idea of the great things this commentary can provide. For me also, this was the first commentary I owned and has been an invaluable resource as a go-to when I needed some help understanding a passage, and is one I have often bought for or recommended to others. Whilst it is true that it is not as thorough as a single book commentary, there are also some potential benefits of this at times. For example only the bare necessities of a verse or passage are included, so there is potentially less exegesis and discussion of meaning to get lost in when simply trying to get the general gist of the passage. \\r\\n\\r\\nI have been particularly enjoying reading through the Psalms with this commentary recently, Motyer provides such great insight, wisdom and depth in his writings. \\r\\n\\r\\nI highly recommend this as a reference book for anyone who wants to grow with God in understanding His word. \\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n

Great addition to the bookshelf
Great book to read in accompaniment with a Bible, and particularly the Old Testament. There are two great benefits of this book. Firstly, it highlights what the focus or key thrust of a particular passage or verse is, and so is a great tool for getting a broad and general understanding of a text. Secondly, it explains difficult-to-understand words or phrases, which is always a great help. Invaluable to those who struggle to read their Bible, too.

an invaluable resource
The bulk of this book contains a running commentary on every book of the Bible. Understandably, each passage is not treated in as much detail as a dedicated commentary. The variety of authors results in a variety of styles. Some books are treated in a section-by-section fashion which look at the general idea and bring out special points. Other books (especially shorter letters) tend to have almost verse-by-verse exposition. Some books such as Mark's Gospel move quite quickly to application to the modern reader, while others focus more on the original meaning. Each book is prefaced with a succinct introduction to the themes, author and background of the book, and a summary of it's structure. Articles on biblical history, literary genres and how to read the Bible are also included. The overall quality of this book makes it incredibly valuable resource for anyone wanting to read their Bibles better.
