Shepherding a Child's Heart

I'd argue that this is one of the must-read parenting books. The truths taught in this book are fundamental truths about parenting, and this book teaches that we do not just try to fix the behaviour of our children, but more importantly the heart, as the Bible says that it is from the heart flows all the behaviours. The chapters are pretty short, easy to read, full of biblical wisdom from Proverbs, and also the good thing is that after the foundational truths being expounded, the last chapters describe how to parent according to age.

I found this an easy to read book, but with lots to think about. Tedd Tripp focuses on encouraging parents to move past a behaviour focus for our our children, and dealing with the heart and sin issues behind the behaviour. If you want to encourage your children to grow closer to God, and deal healthily with their sin, as well as develop closer relationships as a family, then this book will be a really helpful resource for you!

This book is a great foundation for Biblical, gospel shaped parenting. The key point that you shouldnt focus on behaviour but seek to nurture and shepherd the heart of a child (or anyone for that matter!) is Biblical gold and he exposes a lot of the parenting fads that appear easier for the short term but actually harden the hearts of children to God and his gospel. \\r\\nSmall caveat- I am not a parent yet, but will be applying these principles in my close relationships today and with my children in the future.

The key message of this book is gold: our efforts as parents should not be directed towards changing our children's behaviour, but towards changing their hearts. It is pointless to aim for the appearance of godliness - instead we want to teach and train them to see the sin in their action and draw them to repentance. I didn't agree with a couple of the suggestions but the overall principles are excellent. . . albeit very challenging - it is much easier to parent reactively than proactively!

An absolute must for all parents. It will reveal remarkable clear bible truths on how and why, to parent and also will change your our lives too. Shepherding A child's heart has allowed me to parent with the powerful gospel message and God's grace as a solid foundation. Praise God for the truths of good biblical teaching without legalism and humanism. We have 3 children and I am overwhelmed at the peace these principles have bought to our home.
