    An intriguing and solid explanation of the Qur'anic text

    When it comes to holy scriptures revered by millions, the Qur'an is definitely up there, yet to the average Christian, it is shrouded in mystery and misconception. What actually is in the Qur'an? Who wrote it? What does it have to say about Biblical doctrines and characters?

    In ""The Qur'an with Christian Commentary"", Gordon D. Nickel takes upon himself the immense task of breaking down this sacred scripture and examining its themes, and what they mean for Christians and non-Christians alike. Using a clear, modern translation of the Qur'an by A. J. Droge, Nickel's footnotes lay bare the intriguing themes that recur in the Qur'an: judgment, repentance, forgiveness, etc. - as well as the Qur'an's attitude towards Jews, Christians and other non-Muslims. These footnotes allow the reader to gain insights into the text that many Muslims simply take for granted, or don't notice, thanks to their clarity and independence from Muslim tradition, as well as the choice of translation by Droge, which is likewise unfettered by traditions established in the hadith and Sira.

    Though the work is long and exhausting to read - it took me nearly three months to read all 600 pages - Nickel never slips into caricature or demonisation of Muslims, but always treats them with both grace and fairness. His footnotes help the reader navigate controversial topics, such as the notion of 'jihad', love, and the Son of God in the Qur'an. The focus articles written by contributing scholars are likewise…
