    Incredible Insights

We're often taught about the apostles from a distance but MacArthur delves into where each apostle came from, who they grew up with, and who they were as men before Jesus invited them to follow him. This book takes an amazing path through each man's life -- highlighting personality traits that are recognizable even in today's world. These guys are us with all their faults and often humiliating correction that refined them into the first Christian leaders the world would experience. It's an eye-opening account that God really does work with any type of person even during the most important part of Christian history. God didn't pick kings or celebrities or even people who were incredible at doing incredible things. The title ""Twelve Ordinary Men"" says it all -- the ordinary given something extraordinary to do. MacArthur does an excellent job consistently pointing back to the Bible to support the descriptions of each apostle or the people around them. For anyone curious about who the apostles were, this read is worth it.

    Great insight

Great insight into the 12 apostles by drawing together the gospel accounts. \\r\\nIn particular the 1st chapter was really helpful in seeing them as real people and how their growth and journey with Jesus is reflected in their writings which helps us understand the NT better.

    Terrific reading

This book provides a deep insight into the lives of the disciples, focusing on the development and maturing of their Christian faith throughout their lifetimes. Macarthur draws from a wide range of Biblical and historical sources in this book and thereby gives us a unique insight into the disciples. He focuses on the disciples personalities - including strengths and weaknesses - and how these were moulded by God and ultimately used for His service. Through focusing on the disciples, Macarthur draws out many principles which are applicable to our practical faith today, as well as deepening our understanding of Scripture. Highly recommended.
