Moving contemporary fiction.
Sharon Garlough Brown tells the moving story of four strangers as they embark together on a journey of spiritual formation: Hannah, a pastor who doesn't realize how exhausted she is. Meg, a widow and recent empty-nester who is haunted by her past. Mara, a woman who has experienced a lifetime of rejection and is now trying to navigate a difficult marriage. Charissa, a hard-working graduate student who wants to get things right. You’re invited to join these four women as they reluctantly arrive at a retreat center and find themselves drawn out of their separate stories of isolation and struggle and into a collective journey of spiritual practice, mutual support and personal revelation. Along the way, readers will be taken into a new understanding of key spiritual practices and find tangible support for the deeper life with God. Sensible Shoes: A Story About the Spiritual Journey (#01 in Sensible Shoes Series)$27.99
Although I appreciated the spiritual growth opportunity this book provides on a deeper personal level of connecting with Jesus, it was really hard to read because the characters were so cliche and the story writing was cringe worthy. I had to force myself to pick up the book to finish it. It's such a shame because it has so much potential to be an excellent book. I will never understand publishers letting such a low quality of writing go to book shops.

Good but tedious at times
There were some really great exercises the group did at their spiritual retreat, to help you communicate better with God & to hear from Him more effectively. There were some really poignant moments for each of the four main characters. Though it was an emotional slog at times (I suppose that's the purpose of the book- to think & feel deeply). There were times when the story dragged, but then improved. I wouldn't need to read it again.

not a relaxing read
Before you start to read this book, take a sharpie and blot out the swearing near the bottom of pages 155 and 163; that way when your heart is soft from seeking the Spirit you won't get a slap to the face. This is not a fiction work to read as a break from life. This is a work that will have you praying and seeking God for a deeper understanding of yourself or others.

Great for a Study
This book is incredibly popular so I was looking forward to taking the plunge and reading it. I enjoyed getting to know the women and seeing their stories evolve, their growth and self discovery. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting though, being more suitable for me personally as a study then something I'd choose to read from the fiction genre. I was also very shocked that it has two occasions of swearing in it yet this has never been mentioned to me by all the people who have raved about it and recommend it so highly to me.
